Journaling is a personal form of expression. With each phrase written down, you transfer a piece of what is floating around in your mind onto a piece of paper. It doesn’t need to look or use any fancy supplies; one writing tool and paper is all that is needed. Whether using it as a coping method, to ground yourself, or with a different goal in mind, journaling is a process that anyone can partake in.

Journaling means to slow down, become mindful, and take some time out of your day to ponder about what you’re experiencing, how it impacts you, and others. It allows you to reflect and listen to yourself. It is not writing for the public eye–it is content that is special to you, combining what only you as the writer can make meaning out of. As you continue this practice, you can further develop your perspective and mindset toward life while growing closer to yourself.

How to begin

1. Take it step by step

When you begin journaling, you don’t need to start big and write elaborate paragraphs about what’s on your mind. Start smaller. You can begin with jotting one or two lines about emotions you are feeling that day or what you are grateful for. When you feel comfortable and prepared, you can start to expand your ideas and lengthen them–but until then, don’t pressure yourself and take into account that sometimes less is more.

2. Review and reflect

Journaling can feel daunting at first, and you may not know where or how to start. An easy way to incorporate this practice into your routine is reviewing your day and reflecting upon yourself and what you have accomplished. Doing so can aid with your productivity and motivation by making you self-aware and encouraging you to establish goals and priorities for yourself for the future.

3. Copy down quotes

We learn from others constantly. Pulling inspiration from others is part of how we grow and evolve ourselves. If you find a quote that inspires you, copy it down into your journal. If you wish, you can add a few of your thoughts regarding it below, make connections, etc.

4. 1… 2… 3… go!

Set yourself a timer and get to writing. Sometimes we ponder too much about what to write rather than doing the writing. Setting a timer of a couple of minutes when you feel stuck is an effective method you can implement to encourage yourself to write down what you identify as most important.

5. Choose the right journal for you

In conclusion, journaling is both an art form that serve as a powerful tool for growth and self-discovery–offering a dedicated space for mindfulness, reflection, and self-expression. Anyone can incorporate it into their routine, while gaining benefits such as improved mood and promoted self-confidence.
