What is the Scientific Method?
The scientific method is a way of testing facts by experimenting. Its purpose is to give concrete steps for analyzing a research question. Learning how to use the scientific method is important because it is used to discover how the world works through a more objective lens. It is used in everyday life through the process of trial and error.
Steps of the Scientific Method:
Make an observation or ask a question: Ask a question you would like to be answered. An example question is does salt affect the freezing rate of water?
Hypothesis: A hypothesis is a guess of the answer to your question. For example, salt slows down the freezing rate of water significantly.
Test: Now that you have asked your question and created a hypothesis, you need to test out your hypothesis. To do this, create a measurable chart that shows a noticeable change or does an empirical analysis. For example, you could compare the freezing rate of water with and without salt by making a table and doing multiple tests.
Analyze results: Look for patterns found in the data and look for the connection between important variables. For example, during my observations, I see that salt makes water freeze an average of 10 minutes slower.
Conclude: Make a conclusion based on the data found in your chart. For example, in conclusion, salt slows down the freezing rate of water significantly. Remember, it's okay if your hypothesis is wrong, the point of science is discovering things through trial and error.
