The SAT and ACT are both standardized tests used for college admissions. If you are considering taking one of them, this article discusses key tips on how to ace it.
Pick the standardized test most suitable for yourself.
There are notable factors differentiating the SAT and ACT. The SAT is out of 1600 points whereas the ACT is out of 36. The SAT consists of two sections: a reading and writing section lasting 64 minutes, as well as a math section lasting 70. The ACT lasts two hours and 55 minutes, however there is a 40-minute optional writing evaluation you could take as well. Broken down, the ACT involves a 35-minute reading section, 45-minute English section, 60-minute math section and 35-minute science section. Depending on your capabilities and strong points, one may be a better fit for you–and no colleges have a preference, so no need to worry.
2. Take time preparing and practising
Whether you choose the SAT or ACT, remember to take time to prepare and practice to feel as comfortable as possible heading into the test. Familiarizing yourself with the format of your chosen test, taking practice tests, and answering practice questions are extremely important for a successful performance. Taking a few months to prepare will allow you to create a study plan that works for you, as well as work on observed weaknesses.
3. Stay positive leading up to the test
Stressing over the SAT or ACT is normal, but breathe and try to calm yourself leading up to the test in order to perform your best. Take care of yourself and make sure you’re receiving enough sleep, are eating well, and exercising. Recognize that if you do wish to take the test again, you have the option to do so.
4. Steps to take night before and day of
The night before taking the test, ensure that you are familiar with the location at which you are testing and have prepared the necessary items and supplies such as your ID, admissions ticket, No. 2 pencils, eraser, and calculator (if choosing to take the chosen test in person). However, generally, ensure that you are well-rested before taking the test and that you have your alarm set to wake you up in the morning.
Thus, acing the SAT or ACT entails selecting the test that best matches your abilities, devoting sufficient time to study and practice, having a positive mindset, and ensuring you are well-prepared the night before and on the day of the test.
